What is Double Layer DVD – R/RW?
This kind of DVDs come in 12 cm diameter, double sided and has a capacity of 17.1 GB and that is very big. Another one with a lesser size of 8.4 GB comes in 12 cm diameter single sided.
These kinds of DVDs have compatibility issues with Legacy DVD ROMs which are basically of pick up head overrun type. So to avoid this compatibility issue the 2 layers must be equally recorded.
How is Dual Layer recording done?
The dual layer recording standard provides significantly more data to be stored in the disc per side per disc approximately 8.5 GB per side, Compared to 4.7 GB for single layer discs.
A dual layer disc differs from its usual counterpart by inserting a second physical layer within the disc itself. The drive with dual layer capability penetrates through the semi transparent layer. The layer change can cause some time delay but that is very minute.
A few Technical details
• New technology allows material to be either read or recorded on one layer without affecting material on the other layer.
• Storage Capacity: 8.5GB of storage capacity on a single-sided disc — No need to flip the disc
• Largest compatible DVD back-up and data archiving format for computer drives
• Middle zone length can be decided by application/PC in order to shorten finalize time
• The industry’s first Double-Layer DVD-R (DVD-R DL) discs. The new 4x media nearly doubles the storage capacity on DVD recordable discs from 4.7GB to 8.5GB on a single side while maintaining compatibility with existing DVD video players and DVD-ROM drives.
